Prayer Spaces Goal 10

Religion is a fundamental tool for integration within our society and the broader Luiss Community. The prayer spaces in our Campuses and Residences serve as places where individuals can express their religious faith within the university context.

1. Promote the value of inclusion

Multiculturalism is defining characteristics of societies with high rates of well-being, health, and sustainability.

Italian society is one among them with Islam being the most professed religion among immigrants (33.3%), followed by Orthodox Christianity (28.8%), and with the remaining 10% adhering to various other religions.

2. Contribute to breaking down stereotypes and discrimination through your actions

Interfaith dialogue promotes peaceful coexistence in our increasingly multicultural societies. Currently, there are more than 2.3 billion Christians, 1.9 billion Muslims and 1.16 billion Hindus worldwide. There are more than 500 million Buddhists and 430 million adherents of regional ethnic-based religions. It is important to gain knowledge about different histories, cultures, and religions because only through understanding and respecting religious freedom can we dismantle stereotypes and discrimination.

3. Seek opportunities to connect with people different from you

Just as biodiversity is essential for the ecosystem’s survival, cultural diversity is a valuable heritage to preserve. The United Nations General Assembly has championed the Universal Declaration of Cultural Diversity and annually observes World Day for Cultural Diversity, Dialogue, and Development.

Engaging in conversations with individuals from various countries, cultures, and backgrounds is always enriching.

4. Protect the right to religious freedom

Religious freedom is fundamental to the protection and strengthening of democracy, citizens’ rights, and social cohesion. This right is far from guaranteed and is violated in nearly one-third of the world’s countries (31.6%), affecting about two-thirds of the global population.
